      Welcome to Tech Tips! Tech Tips was created as a space for instructors to find new ideas for incorporating technologies into the classrooms. Please read the below information before you begin. Additionally, find the Forum section so that you can share your experience with other instructors.

      Technology is a fun and exciting way to change some of your classroom curriculum. However, before jumping into it, it's important to note the difference between a technology-centered and a learner-centered approach. Richard Mayer, one of my favorite Multimedia theorists, explains important differences between following a technology-centered approach as opposed to a learner-centered approach.

      A technology-centered approach involves asking which technology would be best for presenting information (Mayer, 2009). For example, if I have a camera and an ipad, I will decide to use one or both devices to enhance my curriculum. 

      A learner-centered approach involves asking whether a given technology enhances human cognition (2009). For example, if you choose to play a video while also playing a radio behind it, it probably won't enhance student cognition because the audio with the radio and the video will clash. 

      The main takeaway from this short post is to question why you are going to use a given technology. You should not use the given technology if your answer is consistent with the mindset of a technology-centered approach. Instead, you should question how that technology might enhance student cognition?

Student Groups

    • The Big Idea

      KPScholar's group functionality is an easy way to place students into different groups within their online class. If you group students, then you can:

      •             Provide each group with their own activities

      •             Grade each group separately 

      •             and bring students closer together. 

      Please follow the below directions to group students. 

    • How To:

      Here is an idea for use:  

      Once students are placed into groups, you could title their groups by team name, and have them compete to finish their homework or a quiz first. 

      How does it work?

      • Log into KPScholar and navigate into your course
      • Navigate to the Admin block and click on bulk enrollments

      • Fill out the bulk enrollment page.
        • The file that you upload should be in a CSV format. 
          • The first column should contain the word Login in the first row and Group in the second row. 
          • The rest of the columns should be the student's emails and the group name.
          • Please use the template attached to try this out in your class. 
        • Make sure that the CSV delimiter is a (,),
        • Encoding is UTF-8,
        • Role to assign is Student,
        • First column contains Email Address,
        • Create groups and groupings, Yes. 
        • Click Enrol them to my course. 

      •  Now if you navigate to the enrolled users page, you will find each user has a different group associated with their account.

      • Once your users are in groups, you can turn on their group settings in your online course activities. 
      • This image is an example of a course activity that has Group Submission Settings. These settings enable you to let the students submit the assignment in groups, require all group members to submit, and creating different groupings for students groups. In addition, if you click add restrictions, you will also see a group setting that only lets certain groups submit to the assignment. 

      • If you are interested in implementing groups, please try this out. It's a quick and fun way to change the way learning can happen online.
